The Sun* has finally crept over the horizon.

After a false dawn...and ensuing darkness ( it's said that the darkest part of the night always comes before the dawn)....don't I know it...8)

OpenSolaris "Indiana" has now been released as stable version. Woohoo...

Pass out the cigars..boys...

This has to have been one of the longest pregnancy's ever...;D

We'll have to check it out, when the first preview of it came out a while ago I did try. But did not have much success.
So we will have to give it another spin.

Yup, I surely will.  :D

I'm on a roll.  Nothing works lately.

Solaris live CD started without a hitch.  Even recognized my Nvidia video card and correctly found the right resolution, if not the right refresh rate.  But that was the end of the success story.

What it didn't recognize was my Internet connection - said, "No drivers available for VIA Technologies."  The device manager offered to find a driver, but of course you need an Internet connection to do that.  Obviously, "You can't get there from here."

Momentarily set back but not yet defeated I thought I'd go ahead and install anyway.  Defeat was not only imminent, but an actual fact in an instant.  Solaris didn't recognize my SATA hard drive.

So.  No Internet, and uninstallable due to an unrecognized hard drive.

Bye, bye Solaris.  How come all these other distro's aren't as user friendly as Granular?

That is same I found on last version of Indiana, Thanks for saving me the time. :D
But really too bad for OpenSolaris, but you are so right on about the friendliness's of Granular.....in so many ways. =)

Hehehe..

Chris...This is the "stable" version...(I'll come back to that later)

I tried it out this afternoon...

Talk about power hungry...(My machine is a P3 1000Mhtz with 512 ram..)

Running it in 'live' mode, was utterly time consuming...

It must have taken about 5 minutes to load...just to see the GUI...

I should have seen this as a sign of things to come.. ::)

But not to be daunted...I decided to do a screenshot...(the wallpaper is very nice)..

Oh boy...what a mistake.... :P

Literally, half an hour later...it was grinding away trying to process the order, with nothing to show...

If I was in a desert, I would have diied of thirst before then...;D

I would have loved to have done a review, complete with images etc...

But at this rate...

Now I know why they called it their first "Stable" release...

The 'stable' houses an olde nag...

PS.

You should know, I had a huge dust-up with one of the group leaders of the Indiana project a while back. (I won't mention his name...just in case he might sue me...hehehehe)

Anyway, I was / and remain a member of their team fori...and I bagged them fiercely by comparing their inane logging / live system compared to Granular..

He Pm'd me with flames shooting out of his ears..

In response, I offered a side by side comparison to Granular..

To this day...he has never replied...

Gee...I wonder why.... ;D

I have tried the new '"stable" OpenSolaris release. It STILL doesn't recognize my sound card! The OSS driver released by 4front Technologies works (and is a free & open-source driver) should've been included, but either it is and didn't detect my card properly, or it wasn't included at all. My card is a Sound Blaster Audigy SE (the kind you can get at generic places like Wal-Mart).
Another thing that put me off was the install crashed someway through and propmtly rebooted my system by itself, only to have the cd re-load again.
OpenSolaris has potential, but it definitely needs a lot more work done on it before it's truly ready for prime-time.

It would've been nice if they included Looking Glass to inspire more people to become devs for it since Sun is now focused on its Second-Life-clone called "Wonderland". As if we need more of those around. ::) Couldn't they just use OpenCroquet or Second Life?

Yes, it would have been great...but unfortunately like so many great ideas that they get, it is left to falter and die, simply due a combination of in~fighting and lack of wanting to see things through to an end..   The moment they meet resistance, they seem to quit....and (like I said earlier) turn to in~fighting...instead of progressing an idea.

I feel bad this has not worked out as they wanted it too... I like Solaris 10 (many don't... but I do) This new project is a huge step back for them. They should have stuck with   what they had going with Solaris 10 and build on that, instead of completely over-hauling the entire show.... ZFS is now their only true accomplishment in a long, long time.
I also feel bad that I have to say... maybe they need to stick to what they do best... which is build computers / hardware.... (specifically in the server arena like their Blades)
