So, it's finally here. I downloaded it and installed it last-to-last night. I did have some initial configuration glitches as Ubuntu is the first distro till now to not detect my ethernet card at all. It's weird, but a little Googling was enough to give me a hint that my ethernet card is not that popular, so some distros don't include its drivers. I did get the Linux drivers on my motherboard's CD, but those didn't install and were a bit old. So, I had to hunt down the new drivers myself and eventually found the correct ones. I had to compile the drivers from source, and had to apply some 2-3 other tricks to get it working. Some wise people have said (at least I suppose someone has said), "What life (or an OS, for that matter) could be of any use if Internet doesn't work there?" ;)

Now, my Ubuntu works like a charm. I have my ethernet card working, Internet working, all multimedia codecs installed, etc.,etc. I am enjoying my experience with this latest Ubuntu. It boasts some incredibly fast boot up and shutdown times. So, all in all, I am impressed.

8 / 10 for this release. :)

I suppose I could give this thing a try. The buntu's have never really gotten very far with me. And to be honest the hardware issue
does not surprise me that much. I couldn't believe that I had issues when trying the new mint, but given their relationship. That might
be why I had the hardware issues. Oddly enough for me though, the hardware was the popular newer hardware.

Guys,

I started to look into downloading one of these buntu things.  :D And maybe I just didn't realize how many of them there really is.

So what version did you guys download, and is kubuntu a good choice, cause I want to try the 64 bit version also.

Edit,

Ok I downloaded the kde4 64bit version of kubuntu. It's burning now, so hopefully this thing will be pretty cool.  ;)

hehe now I'm downloading the 32 bit version too. :D

I remember having compatability issues with kubuntu fiesty fawn, which steered me to Fedora core 7, but I hear tell that kubuntu has come a long way since.
As far as Ubuntu, I'm just not really a big fan of Gnome...

chrisz on April 28, 2008, 03:40:01 AM
Well here is a shot of it running in a vm, ummmm it's kind of what I expected. I am still not so sure why everyone is so in love with it.
To me it looks just about any other system. Maybe I'll try the gnome version, maybe there is a big difference or something.

Edit,

Sorry I'll post the screen shot when I reboot.

Now I am running the 64bit version, and I do have to say this is something impressive. It's running at a blazing speed, and it's rather smooth.
One thing is that it did not detect my nvidia stuff right, so my resolution is off quite a bit. But
I think I could easily fix that.

The edition I tried was Ubuntu (GNOME). That is the one I've always loved. It's now installed on my system and I am enjoying it.

The kubuntu is much more impressive than I originally thought. And I did end up installing the 32 version on one of my systems.
I think my plan now is going to be downloading and trying the gnome version.

I think you'll like the GNOME version much more than the KDE one.

Please don't tell me that you are going to base the next version of Granular on Ubuntu, if this is true, then I'll have to search for another distribution.

chrisz on April 29, 2008, 03:53:50 AM
abhayks,

Don't panic or jump to conclusions. Granular will continue to be the granular it is, without a major change for the base.

We also each have our own personal preferences and likes as well when it comes to linux distro's. We just enjoy sharing
our experiences when trying out other distros.  ;)

Ubuntu GNOME is the first Linux that I installed on my computer and I like it very much, but I still use version 7.10. I find that I have just been using Granular now though.
Keep breathing, it is all you really have

Ubuntu GNOME is the first Linux that I installed on my computer and I like it very much, but I still use version 7.10. I find that I have just been using Granular now though.

I started with Gnome...

Being a Mac man...I was advised to go the way of Gnome..and for awhile I stuck with it..

But eventually I tired of it..and in someways found that the parallels between Gnome and OS-X ( in terms of layout and functionality) were becoming a hinderance and an annoyance..

So eventually I spread my wings and dipped in KDE...( via Mepis & Kubuntu )

I have been hooked ever since..

Doesn't mean I think the sun shines out of the backside of KDE...but that I think it is more Linuxy...(if there can be such a thing) than either Gnome or XFCE..etc..

For me, my future in Linux will continue to be Granular and KDE-4...

And AFAIK...KDE-4 wil eventually grace Granular's portals..
