Grub errors don't usually end up in data loss, so that's the good news.

Now the bad news is that we need to know exactly what might of happened before this error started showing itself.
If I remember right there are a few different reasons why you may have gotten to this error. But unless we know exactly
what happened, we run the risk of telling you to do the wrong thing. So if you could post exactly what happened, and then
your drive information, and then if you are able to still use a live cd.

Then we could more than likely be able to get you up and running again.

In the meantime, if this "drip irrigation" project is vital to a job, etc. I would suggest to go to a computer store and purchase an external hard-drive enclosure (it is just the case with no hard drive) They come with a power adapter and a usb cable
If you have another pc which is working, (or you can borrow a friend's pc) hook up you hard drive to this device, plug it into the pc via usb and you will be able to access "everything" even WIndows files, etc. without a password or anything, as long as this is not a dead hard-drive ;)

This is just so you can retrieve all this vital information... you can make a new folder on the pc you use, then copy everything to a cd or dvd rom (always remember to back up.....)
I hope this helps you for that area of your problem :)

As Gemini told, you can always use a pen drive or an external hard disk to backup your data. Now to back up data, you need to be able to log into some OS. And for that purpose, you can use the Granular LiveCD (or any other livecd for that matter), as long as the problem persists.

Regarding the GRUB error, in 90% cases, it can be solved easily. Just let us know what happened before the error an on which drive/partition have you installed Granular, that is, is it hda3 or hda4 or sda3 or whatever...

guys thanx for the replies!

and i explained my problem to my procter he has given me some extra time(regarding my project)
guys
here is the thing
as far as my live cd is concerned
i just can't use it any more
and my drive info is sda8 or sda9 (am not dead sure) one of them is swap type and the other is the ext3 as u guys suggested
i can't even use any of my bootable disks
the same error persists

Anurag Bhandari on May 24, 2008, 07:09:48 AM
None of your bootable disks work? That sounds weird because the booting of CDs doesn't, in any way, depend on the hard disk problems. That is why we love to call livecds sometimes "life savers".  ;D

Anyway, just make sure you have the boot priority for your CD/DVD drive in BIOS at the top position. If that is so, you'll be able to easily boot into any LiveCD and recover your data.

To solve the problem, boot from the Granular livecd and log into the root user account. Open up Konsole (command-prompt) and issue the following commands:

Code: [Select]
grub
root (hd0,7)
setup (hd0)

That should solve your problem. I am assuming that the ext3 partition is sda8.

Hmm.... First thing, it's sure that your problem "CD not booting" has nothing to do with that GRUB error. It may be either your CD drive has gone kaput or the CD that you tried is not burnt properly. Can you conceive either of the case?
