I noticed that I can not save an image from a web page to a thumb drive, I am able to do this when I log into Ubuntu. Granular will let me save to the desktop then to the thumb but not directly, or to another partition on the hard drive.

fstab is probably mounting the thumb drive as read only. When you have it plugged in and mounted, check it in the control center.
Under the disks, it will add a tab if an external drive is mounted. Then you should see the options graphically. If not just check fstab.

This is a long shot but could it be the setting in Firefox "always ask me where to save files"? I know it defaults to the desktop.

Its not the default save location, for some reason it just does not want to let me save to a thumb drive unless it is coming from the desktop. I also have problems saving to my USB back up hard drive from anyplace.

What format is the Thumb Drive? I use many of them as they're great to provide Windows Users with the Power of Linux.
Did you try Chrisz suggestions. I like the Bigger Ones now and partition with several formats for varied and obvious usages.
Had a Ext3 that had been created within another Distro as root, so it wouldn't write in another until it was mounted and given
some permission, so they can be tricky, especially after doing several formats or wipes, as they are delicate in many ways, but I'm
certain you'll get it solved, as these handy portables and running a few virtual OS is a good way to go.  ;D

Perhaps it was just me, but I am now able to do this and I do not know why.

Guess old age is just setting in.

Anyway, nice to know that the problem in your case is gone now. :)
