Ok let's try installing the full kernel source then first. And then go back and install that same ati package and see what it does. Also just make sure you install the correct kernel source. The full rpm name is going to be

kernel-source-2.6.24.4.granular2-1-1granular2008.i686.rpm

I guess it could be that there is no directory there. I do know if you install the full source, you will have a directory to install the fglrx module into.

You'll have to install it through synaptic

macman on April 16, 2008, 03:48:25 AM
As I posted before, I realized I do have that kernel package installed. In fact Synaptic says that the

Package: kernel-source-2.6.24.4.granular2
Installed Version: 1-1granular2008.i686.rpm
Latest Version: 1-1granular2008.i686.rpm
Description: The kernel-2.6.24.4.granular2 source code.

is already installed.

macman,

Just in case you can try this tomorrow. Just open up the control center, and go to hardware. Then to set up graphical server. The go to graphic card, and in the pop up window, go to ati. There should be an option for x1300 and later.
Try selecting that one, and let's see what happens. I am more curious what the system will tell you.

macman on April 16, 2008, 11:07:56 AM
Control center -> Hardware -> Video Card (ATI X1300 and later, as you said)
In the right panel I can see some details and "Run config tool" at the bottom. Pressing the "Run config tool" button opens XFdrake.

First of all I run the Test and that had never gave me problems (even when further rebooting meant fu*kin the system). As it gave no problems now: I can see clearly all of the colored vertical lines but as I said I don't thing that means that everything is ok.

So I cliked on the button to select the graphic card. Ad I said I found "ATI X1300 and later" by default, so I didn't select other card and just pressed "OK". It shows me a message advising "There's a proprietary driver available for your video card which may support additional features. Do you wish to use it?"  I pressed on "YES" button and it showed an "Xorg configuration" window in which "3d hardware acceleration" is selected; "Enable Translucency (Composite extension)" is selectable but not selected and "Automatically start the graphical interface (Xorg) upon booting" is selected. I should press Ok or Cancel. After pressing Ok I made that test once more and once more I can see clearly those colored lines.

What should I do? "Reboot and pray" or forget about ATI drivers on Linux?

macman,

hehe I would reboot, we have so much time into this machine I think the worst thing that could happen would require another reinstall.  ;D

Understanding that it did not work when we tried it before, but I think that may have been because of different reasons.

macman on April 16, 2008, 02:58:39 PM
No way. I rebooted the system and (as I expected) it didn't work.
I suppose the problem is that granular does not install kernel sources in the way dkms-ati expects. For both 2.6.24.4 and 2.4.24.3 installing kernel sources does not create that "build" or "source" folder as shown in a screenshot in this previous post of mine
http://www.granularlinux.com/forum/index.php?topic=595.msg4365#msg4365

Quoting myself
Moreover I have got no "build" or "source" directories /lib/modules/2.6.24.4.granular2/ even if I can see Synaptic shows me that I do have 2.4.24.4 kernel sources installed. I can just see a "kernel" folder (having some others subfolders) and some "modules.<something>" files into /lib/modules/2.6.24.4.granular2/

I don't know if this could help you developers https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_cat83-inst.html

Please pay attention to
  • Minimum System Requirements
  • System Recommendations
may be this could help in correcting some possible errors.

No way. I rebooted the system and (as I expected) it didn't work.

This means that as I restarted the system it lets me login through the GUI, it completes the loading of all of the desktop environment stuff (those icons disposed horizontal and between which you can find the one of the monkey wrench etc.)  it finally hangs when it completes all of those icons and (I suppose) it should be the time to show the desktop in order to finally give the control to the user. It just hangs showing the rounded clock icon as if it was loading something but it's actually making nothing: no hard drive activity and I left it "loading" for more than 15 minutes but nothing happened.

macman,

Looking further into this, something should have worked here. So I would say to hold off on the 3d stuff until the drivers are further developed for
you laptop.

What about granular kernel sources? Is it normal that of having no "build" and no "source" folders, as shown in my previous posts?

chrisz on April 17, 2008, 02:11:03 PM
No once installed it's there, it's always in /usr/src & the modules are in /lib/modules

You are the first person to ever say they are not there. So I am not sure what's going on, on your system there.

Chris, I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. Could you please take a look to the following post?
http://www.granularlinux.com/forum/index.php?topic=595.msg4365#msg4365

I did not say I cannot find my kernel sources into /usr/src ...
Please pay attention to the screenshoot to understand "who" says "where" it's expected to find those folders.

Thanks for your time.

If only I knew the complete command to run dkms I could try to solve as done by this guy
