I usually love browsing through the Gentoo graphic stuff, as it is always top of the line in quality. With a bunch of
neat ideas, to go with it. So I ran across these two logo's on their website.

http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/graphics.xml

Now for me being again graphically handicapped, I have to ask how in the world did they do these, cause they are
really sharp. Looking in the gallery, we have some beautiful logo's ourselves. Anyway just thought these were really
beautiful, and thought I would share.

Those Are some spectacular graphics.  If I had to criticize I'd say, "Put some sort of colored background behind the glass - maybe a soft yellow with appropriate shading.  If only the logo said, "Granular."  Or, even better, just "Linux" so you could use it with any OS.

Like Chris, my artistic talent lies mostly in appreciating the hard work somebody else has done.  My wallpaper collection has around 400 pieces and is constantly growing thanks to KDE and Gnome Look.  If I didn't get bored so easily the collection wouldn't be nearly so large.  My desktop wallpaper rarely lasts more than a week.

I recently stumbled across this site:  http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpapers/    I think the site is probably Russian.  Anyway, the artwork here is unusual and interesting.  I particularly like those wood carvings.  My wife is Russian.  She said the words on the bottom have messages like "Good Luck" and etc.  I downloaded several of the images, so I'll probably have enough variety to keep me away from KDE Look for a few weeks.

galjaman,

Thank you for the link, I already bookmarked it, and I am sure I will spend a lot of time going through it. What I saw so far, wow nice stuff.

Also I am so graphically challenged, that geminiguy has been trying to coach me along a little to help me out. And truth be told, I think
I also would rather view the beautiful work that people do. Some of it is amazing. I just want to be able to do the little stuff like do the
mirrored text, and then work my way up to something like the glass logo's

Also gemini used to have  a website for graphic designs, I will have to look it up, and post. Unless he sees this first, then maybe
he can help me out here. But I remember that being a real interesting place for people who like graphics.

Chris,

I agree that the artwork of Gentoo is always very cool.

galjaman,

The site you gave the link to indeed hosts some nice, calm and good looking wallpapers, and the website itself has a quite welcoming interface.

Yes Gentoo is always a good looker.. :P

On the same note...

FreeBSD isn't too bad either...

chrisz on March 11, 2008, 05:05:24 AM
Yeah I doubt they will tell us how to do it, anytime soon.  :D

Vlad's work is great. By coincidence, I too recently discovered his site. I was quite impressed by the quality of his artwork.. Needless to say, I downloaded a goodly number of wallpapers.

Cheers

I would say to put more beautiful nature wall papers anstead such graphicals, I never liked such graphicals,
nothing more beautiful then nature, and animals, like Pardus linux they have a real beautiful wall paper when you boot up.

OK guys... I have been trying to replicate the Gentoo glass logo with just xara lx, but this is extremely difficult to do with a 2d app, so... I am now venturing into the complex world of Blender :D
This is my first attempt and am now realizing, Blender may not be as complicated as I originally thought :)

I will continue working on this until I get it to look just like the Gentoo images ;) There are a plethora of video, etc. tutorials (especially some awesome ones done by a young boy who calls himself super3boy) which is extremely cool to me as well as humbling ::)

Mark my words... "We will have a similar logo in time" ;)

Mark my words... "We will have a similar logo in time" ;)

That's the spirit.  :D ;D

Anyway, nice first attempt.  8)

Gemini,

Looking good so far, and I have no doubt that you will have a nice looking logo soon.  ;)

Thanks for the confidence boost guys..
I'm having a lot of fun with this.. Here's the 2d attempt

You are getting closer and closer, Gemini. Just my opinion, try lighting out the grey color of the text, as that would give a more "transparent" look. What do you say?

chrisz on March 15, 2008, 03:35:11 AM
Again gemini, you have talent. You'll get, I think the flower is throwing off the look of it. But remember my graphic ability.

Gemini on March 15, 2008, 10:04:35 AM
Thanks guys, I don't know much about working with Blender (yet). That's what Ive been trying to do (make the gray color clear) :D It's kinda tricky getting to know what's what.
I am only using background images, like the flower to help me see the result of each step. It helps to have a crisp & bright image behind while trying to get the transparency just right ;)
I've already crashed Blender a dozen times (thank Lord for autosave) ;D

Now, one can use Blender for some steps, then transfer into programs like PovRay / MegaPov, or Crystal Space.... I downloaded all of these, but just can't seem to get them to work? I assigned the paths just as they say and still nothing? This is still one of the "only" real problems with Linux for such a tech challenged person like myself... a lot of the really good apps are not put together to the point where you can just download them and they just work.... you have to "make", compile from source, etc.... This is what I have always felt is "the only thing" holding Linux back from being #1 in the home desktop market :) The same goes for Wings 3D, etc.... all need to be built from source or what have you....
