So, which Linux distro helped you take the first step in the Linux world?  :)

Mine was SuSE.  :D

Mandrake was my first as it was the ONLY distro that would install on my dual cpu-not dual core-
machine
if you bought it
a truck driver brought it

I started with Slackware 7.1, then -> Red Hat -> Debian -> back to Slak then to PCLinuxOS 07. I haven't tried Granular as of yet but I will be d-loading it today.

Xandros was my first distro several years ago - it looked easy and user friendly. Quickly realized it was too limiting for me. Looked at Ubuntu, loaded a kde desktop on it and decided that was for me. Found Pclinuxos to be the best available kde distro for me.

As I grew more comfortable with linux I went from a dual boot (Xandros, XP) to a triple boot, and then more. I currently have about 9 distros booting on my machine. I like to see what is available out there and see what features distros have.

I would say my current prime distro is Pardus (running the 2008 RC) as it does everything I need well and looks good doing it. Anxiously waiting the final release of Pclinuxos 2009 to see if it can regain the crown as my top distro. My other 'core' distros, that I always have installed while I overwrite and play with others, are Arch, Sidux and Pclinuxos. The other distros I have installed currently are Sabayon 4 64, Crunchbang, CosmosisX, Mandriva 2009, and Vector 6 RC.

I tried Granular a while ago and liked what I saw but it wasn't quite there for me in comparison to other distros. I have been waiting for the release of 1.0 to give it a try again and I've downloaded it at home this morning and will be giving it a spin tonight when I get home. I'm hoping for good things.....

I keep checking the PCLinux forums hoping that 2009 will be released.

I am sitting at my wifes computer browsing and posting never realizing that it shows your current OS along with your post.

I guess the secret is out, I secretly use my wifes machine.

My first linux distro was the livecd of KNOPPIX. Later I installed PcLinuxOS and now I'm using Granular for almost 1,5 year. The last year I tried over 20 different distro's (most of them using KDE). To my opinion, after all Granular is still the best.

I'm at work, hence the shameful Windows XP use...  ;D

I switched back to my machine.

My absolute first distro must have been Slackware, because there wasn't much choice then. But I spent more time running stuff like Desqview, Desqview/X and OS/2, and didn't come back to Linux till a few years ago, when it was Suse 3.1, I think. Now I have been running nothing but Linux on this desktop for several years, till yesterday, when I installed Windows 7, with Granule on the other partition.

My first Linux was Suse 6 and I keep using Suse til Suse 9. Then I switched to Kanotix, then used Mepis for a few years. Tried Ubuntu then but I hated it! Moved on to Sidux and then tried Pardus (my girlfriends OS of choice).

Now I'm using Sabayon4 which has a lot of bugs but is quite usable - and the only Linux that works properly with my geforce9400 and compiz at the moment.

I really wanted to use Granular on my new machine but it got too many issues for me (mostly graphic related)

I haven't used windows for ten years now and I'm proud of that!

Just like pretty much everyone here, it was Knoppix first of all then an older version of Mandrake. Tried to get SuSE to run on my pentium 150mHZ Thinkpad back in the day and it said no. After having to have Windoze on that machine for too long, I got a much faster desktop with XP on it. Had it for a bit and saw one of my IT friends and a box that said SuSE 9.1 and yes oh yes that is where it began! Have been Winders free for several years. Not anywhere close to 10 years but long enough to just smirk at those who think winboring hung the moon. My wife is hooked on it. She likes the fact that we dont have to tear it down every weekend to play the game, find the virus or catch the spyware. It is faster and just works.

Now the latest in the ongoing saga of systems I have installed is Granular in this compaq presario 725US laptop and Mandriva 2009 on the Dell dimension 2400.

Easiest to install has to be Puppy Linux. Prettiest graphical install Pardus. That one is probably even the most fool proof in terms of partitions as well. But I have tried so many. I have played around with macs at the store which isnt saying much. I use OS2/Warp at work. It runs automation software at the tv station I work for. But my laptop comes to work with me everyday and it shows off Granular.
