So, which Linux distro helped you take the first step in the Linux world?  :)

Mine was SuSE.  :D

Fedora 6 which I installed using 5 cd's and that took about 3 hours...

Talk about a distro with everything including the kitchen sink. ::)

Fedora core7 (after many failed attempts to get kubuntu loaded (must have been something wrong with my download, but knew nothing about that at the time)

But, Fedora came after using Solaris10 for some time ;D

There wasn't too many distro's available when I first started. And some just getting them would have been an issue.
But I did settle in with SuSE. Which I thought was a perfect linux distro. I then used it up until around a year or two ago.
Then I did the distro hopping all over the place, and I think I have around 150 cd's just laying around with everything under
the sun burned on them. Then I narrowed it down to just two, pclinuxos or pc-bsd. (yes bsd) I can run bsd effectively, and
enjoy it in the process. From there I went to mandriva, and stumbled across granular on distrowatch. Still happy I have been
able to settle in here. SuSE is still a good OS, and I have just tried the latest release. And it's really sharp, I just cannot get
over the novell thing. So it's just not for me.  ;)

SuSE is still indeed a very good distro. I have v10.3 installed on my PC which I enjoy immensely. :)

New to linux person here.

My first distro was Knoppix as a live CD. I then went kind of crazy and have been downloading just about any distro I could find.

I have Ubuntu installed at this time simply because it was the first one I could actually get to install on my PC. I have become very comfortable with using it. I am typing this as I am down loading Granular.
Keep breathing, it is all you really have

Welcome jdbark1952.
I tried the first Knoppix a few years back and there has been no looking back at many a Distro. You are about to immediately discover the fantastic Granular and its fine Developers and Community! =)

Thanks for the welcome Zard,

Here it is a couple hours later and I'm still downloading Granular, Don't ever let somebody tell you how fast Cl***wire is, in my area it is very slow in peak use times.

OK, went to bed last night after this post, thinking my second try to download was going to do it, after I blew the first one by trying to do something else online, this is now  3/17/08 and I'm doing a third attempt at a download.

hehe... a common issue for consumers when they are told how fast the companies connection speeds are. They only put such subjects as "peak hours traffic" in very small print :D
Anyway... Esto Vox is definitely worth the time it is taking you to get it.... enjoy :)

I believe it was openSuSE 10.0. However after trying probably 15 - 20 different distros, I have settled on PCLOS and Granular. I have been keeping an eye on Dream Linux 3 lately.

I had Corel first.  Didn't like it.  Only got it because I thought I could run Paradox on it.  Switched to SuSE 6 something very soon after.

Good ole SuSE, gotta love em. I guess. I used suse for a very long time. I do remember the 6 days, but the most memorable version for me was 8.0, hell I think I still have a box set of that release. I also remember making a change in yast and having it finally finish about a week and a half later.  :D :D Oddly enough even back then I enjoyed linux so much, I think I would have wait 3 weeks.  :D :D

Gonna bring this topic back up since I haven't mentioned my early distro experiences. The first Linux distro I tried was either Ubuntu 7.04, Fedora Core 5, or OpenSUSE. Can't remember which exactly, but this was about 2 years ago. During that time I also tried a Solaris Express Developer Edition release. It's amazing how far they've come with OpenSolaris. Just a few years ago there was no wireless support and no special desktop effects. The Linux distro's have come along way as well.

Ah, something in common BlueJay... I "still" use Solaris 10 here n there ;)

Taking in consideration the usefulness of this topic, I have made this sticky.  ;D
