Guess what? Yes, you already guessed it. It's none other than Windows Vista;D

Windows Vista has been named the biggest tech disappointment of the year 2007 by PCWorld magazine. Well, don't ask me why. You already know the reasons.  ;)

Geez, tough choice.

I would have thought Zune would also get the gong...

I would have voted it a close second placing, followed by the Palm fiasco.

I too feel Zune was a huge disappointment by the Microsoft guys. I still don't get the point why Microsoft even developed it in a market dominated by Apple.

Maybe they thought they could steal the iPod idea, just like everything else they've stolen. :o

I often see people alleging Microsoft for stealing all ideas from Apple, but I think MS guys ARE hard-working and haven't stolen anything since Windows 1.01.  ;)

As a matter of fact, there was a recent controversy (you might be aware of this) on this issue. The Mac fans blamed MS for "ripping off" Mac OS X to develop Vista. Now that was obviously a sense-less allegation.

There were some people who came to the rescue of MS, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDNuq94Zg_8, but how he actually proves the fact is really baseless (at least it was how it seemed to me). Do check it out.

The YouTube Video displayed the infamous Mac Advocate Mr. Pogue's Defense of Vista very well. : ) ::) ;)
Is Vista really ME(2) and will it be even as short-lived, as I've never used either OS? is24

Anurag, the controversy goes back to the very earliest days...and while I am sure the MS guys today are hard working...What of it..? It doesn't mean the taint of theft should be ignored or papered over. Theft is theft.

I wouldn't be so sure that is a baseless accusation. Remember, Balmer has repeatedly claimed that Vista has swags of Unix code in the system and that in consequence, these bits of 'unix' are what they are using to intimidate main Linux players such as Canonical, and others.

Also, the first users to point out the remarkable similarities between Vista and OS X, were not Mac users. In fact it was the army of Vista Beta users, who made the comparison. Afterall, they were the ones using X86 chips while Apple was still using PPC chips.

At least that is how I read it..

Cheers

Hmm.... I seemed to have missed these points, Aqua. I think you could be right. But as far as I know (I could be totally wrong), Vista utilizes UNIX code just for the Vista Business and Ultimate editions to provide the UNIX Sub-system for corporates.

That may well be so. But it seems strange to me that they would limit the unix coding to only the business and ultimate models. In effect, it would mean that MS would have had to have had two seperate OS's running in parallel to each other... One with Unix in it and one without. That would seem like an awful business model for any corpoaration... even for MS this would be pretty dumb..

Also, I seem to recall having read that even the basic Vista has ALL the other versions loaded onto the same DVD.

Apparently, someone cracked the loading code and was able to install the "Ultimate" version.

If this is true, then the implication is that there must also be Unix code in even the basic edition..even if it's not apparent.

I am not sure, but yes, this could be the case too (as you are telling). Also, I've heard of the Vista DVD getting cracked too. In my opinion, it was altogether a wrongful decision to include all the versions on one DVD just for the sake of letting the Vista users use the dumbo Anytime Upgrade feature with ease. Or maybe the MS themselves wanted to get Vista pirated?  ;)

Putting all the versions seems like a dumb idea to us and to any more geeky computer users. But we are not the main market for Vista. The main market is the average family user who needs to buy a new computer.

I am pretty sure that MS's in house bean counters (accountants) decided that this would be a great way to save MS a few lousy $$ in production costs, even if it meant taking a risk that some clever hacker would find a way around the coding issues.

As for MS trying to encourage pirating...?

First, they'd have to have a product worth pirating...

But from what I understand, most hackers can't be bothered...no matter what Ballmer says...

Like I said.

Can't see anyone queing up for poor quality eye candy...( not even the hackers :D )

By comparison Steve Jobs must be pissed off with the number of pirated OSX distros out there...
