On the auspicious day when the two projects, Beryl & Compiz, were reunited, most of the Linux enthusiasts were happy, but there were a few who were skeptic of the success of the to-be new born baby - Compiz Fusion. They said that throwing mindless new effects to increase the aesthetics would only make the otherwise stable Compiz relatively unstable.

But I always knew Compiz Fusion would be the clear-cut future winner, in every respect, be it the eye-candy, the stability, or the usability. And here you are, with Compiz Fusion included in almost all the latest major distros. While openSuSE 10.3 was one of the first to include it, Ubuntu went a step ahead by enabling the thing by default for the "advanced" hardware, and believe me, CF did give cool and compelling looks to the boring old interface of Ubuntu. The minimal 3D effects, enabled by default, looked good on my laptop, as good as the 3D effects of Windows Vista Aero.

So according to me, Compiz Fusion is the latest 3D effects trend setter. What do you think?

Looking Glass is good, but it is still a very slow progressing project. The last stable release was on 19th December 2006, well, more than a while ago. Or am I expecting a lot from the biggy Sun?

Actually Looking Glass is a project of some Sun devs. They work on it when time or whatever is available, AFAIK. I believe they'd be happy to accept help from other coders. - Alas! I am no coder! :(

I see. It seems you have been following the project very carefully.  ;)

I think looking glass is the cat's meow...I hope they follow up on it. It could give Compiz-fusion a run for the money :)

Not really, I just managed to get a little information. :D

I will say only this..... "There are big things to come from Looking Glass, sooner than anyone knows" ;) And I will just leave you all dangling and drooling with that ;D

The Compiz-Fusion cube is too cool!.  And not just because it's nifty eye candy.  Rotating from one app to another on the other side of the cube is a snap - and you can take that with either meaning.  I really like the 3d window effects on a rotating cube too.

My only complaint is that you can no longer rotate the cube with the mouse wheel alone unless you are prepared to give up scrolling in whatever window is open.  Or did I miss something?  Nevertheless,  I expect that little problem will be fixed soon.

Looking Glass in its current configuration looks interesting.  Another release may take it a baby hop or maybe even a whole baby pace ahead.  If only the resources were available for work on LG full time.  Then we might see a quantum grown-up step.  That would be wondrous to behold!  LG just may be the future.  Hopefully the future won't leave LG behind.  Or is this last paragraph too metaphoric?

I don't know.  I am currently confused and very unhappy.  I just spent $259 at a car dealership which now enables me to roll the driver's side window open and closed.  Electric windows are oh so convenient - and oh so expensive to fix.  I think cars should come equipped with a back-up window crank for when the electrics fail.  Come to think of it, electric car windows are a lot like Windows.  You know they are going to fail.  It's just a matter of time.

@ galjaman, Yah... I always say the same thing about back up window cranks ;D

@Merlin, "YES"!!! ;) (that individual just had a new baby as well, and is actually back to work on it ;D (he is making steady progress)

That's very interesting to know. My best wishes are too with the Looking Glass guys.  :)

So, how many sides to a cube?

Six...( Thanks Anurag ;D )

But the way the the Compiz cube is used, its only got four usable sides.

That's why Looking Glass should have much more of a future, because the number of window/app stacks laying oblique to each other is far more than four.

Looking Glass is also the closest thing linux has to the 3d desktop/tray functionality that we are seeing in Leopard and Vista.

And there are other alternatives, although I am not up to speed on their developments.

So, while the current community preference has been with Compiz, it's a no brainer.

In fact, I go as far as to say, it's an evolutionary dead-end in comparison.

Other than that, I'd like to see some sort of 3D development of the KDE Tray.

Something along these lines...but with stacked desktops/apps/

Or alternatives such as this..
