Hello, I am new to the forum, and an avid Linux Buff. I do have a problem though, and maybe one of you have encountered it also. I receive a KDE Init error and cannot log in. The screen simply freezes for several minutes then a simple blue screen with a mouse cursor is all that appears. I am not sure what is happening, but I do know it seems like it happened either after beryl was put in autostart or Kooldock, not sure. I am triple booting Linux Mint and Windows XP also.   They appear to be fine. I really like Granular and it has a great look and feel. Kudos for the Loggin screens and start up music, I think they are great. Also, the Gothic wallpaper Rocks out loud!......Any help would be appreciated!

I'm certain the Developers and Techs here can help you, but might provide your Specs.,also have you done any of the new upgrades...esp. any KDE ones?

Yes, as Zard says, please give more information. Your computer's specs, any / all error messages, steps you taken to try to fix it, and so on. The more information you give, the better and quicker help you will get. :D

Hello guys, and thanks for the response. I am using the 0.90 DVD version, not sure if the upgrades have been added lately or not, but it seems like I downloaded it several weeks ago. It is the funworks version.

I have really not tried anything to fix it nor do I know what is causing it, so I could. As far as more info. I would have to re install it and try it again, though I have installed it 3 times and it does it everytime. It seems to have something to do with Beryl and or Kooldock I believe. I wish I could give you more info. at this time, but I will have to re install it to see. I have not upgraded KDE nor have I added any bug fixes Etc. If you have any ideas, or if anyone else has this problem, please let me know. I will keep posted.

Brute,
Can you boot it up to the login screen? If you can, try turning off the 3D stuff from the menu there (bottom of the screen).

Ok, I re installed the system and the problem seems to be with Kooldock. I added a couple of programs to it and it was doing fine.
I added a third and the kooldock vanished! When I did a restart, I get the Kdeinit error please check installation.
Everything else seems to work fine. Xfce desktop works great, just KDE problems. I did get all updates and upgrades where they applied. KDE is version 3.5.8 I believe and Kooldock is 0.4.6-2   Again, the error is Kdeinit  check your installation. Thanks

brute, I was able to recreate the same error by installing the upgrade for kdelibs. I am looking into now for a fix, and will post as soon as I know
something.

brute, ok so this is a fairly easy fix.

The problem is the kdelibs upgrade

Boot your system, and when it gets to the kdm login screen select an xfce login.
Once booted into xfce, open up a terminal, and type su, and then your root password. Then type synaptic.
Once loaded do a search for kdelibs, and from the search results select
kdelibs-suite.... and
kdelibs-devel

Make sure you accept all marked upgrades apt gives you and install them. Once completed
log out, and select restart x server

then select a kde session, and log in. And you should be all set with kde up and running.

Thanks Chris,
And everyone working to make this a great Linux system. I will try your suggestion and post results. Rock on everybody!

Please do post a reply either way. Hopefully it works, and if it does it would be good information for all granular users, if they should ever have a similar problem.  ;)

Just to do a follow up post, so far, I do not have the same problem, so I guess it fixed it. I will re post if I find any issues either related to this, or something else, but so far, so good.

Hello,
I am already post my networking problem in the Granular released section so I don't want to repeat it here.. I am also having the same problem as Chiris is...( while log in kde init not starting) the only difference is, it is not in the Granular but in the PCLOS... there is no other desktop in it other than the kde... so how do I rectify it..
 guys !! advance thanks !!
