There are a lot of problems which are very easily solved - if only one knew how.
For example, my wife discovered that open office would totally freeze the entire desktop if she tried to insert a picture from file into her document. The only way out was ctr - alt - backspace, and then log in again. I lost a few hairs trying to figure what was wrong - and the hair on my head is sparse enough to start with. Finally I checked the forums and found someone once had similar problems. The solution was to install openoffice.org-kde. But I didn't even think to look for the package when she first accused me of breaking the computer . . . again.
So here's my suggestion. How about a permanent forum page where a list of one line problems have a corresponding list of one line solutions?
For example:
Problem Solution
OpenOffice is acting really goofy. Make sure openoffice.org-kde is
installed.
It would be easy enough to categorize. Seems to me that solving those "little" problems by finding a quick answer on a page is a lot easier than digging around in numerous forum threads, or wading through manuals which may or may not have an answer. Geared toward newbies you might call the page an FCP - Frequently Cited Problems. The problem doesn't have to be a "real" one - just something a newbie isn't aware of or doesn't understand. And the solution doesn't necessarily have to be a one liner either. It could be a link to a forum thread where someone smarter than me has already provided an answer to a poor lost soul.
