Just in case anyone not connected with development hasn't noticed, Unity has just released their first release candidate.  This is the Distrowatch link: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=unity

Things seem to be moving along at a rapid rate although not nearly as rapidly as we all would like.

KDE 4.4.1 is in the repository.  While it isn't exactly the huge leap forward I'd imagined, it does seem to be pretty slick and adds a few new features and fixes that weren't available in 4.3.  (I downloaded and installed the PCLinuxOS Beta just to check out 4.4.x)

At the moment I'm happily running MEPIS 8.5 64 bit RC2.  It is very stable, but it will probably go final with KDE 4.3.5.  No doubt Warren will take a few more weeks to upgrade to 4.4.  But who knows?  He's surprised folks before with a very rapid transition to new stuff.

My only complaint is that the catalog of final 64 bit KDE distros running 4.4 is very, very slim.  Like none of them.  Although a few are in the alpha or beta stages.  Alas . . . one can only wait and bite fingernails.

I downloaded the Unity 2010 RC1 yesterday. Now I am going to use it as base to build off a developer-only release of Granular 2 as beta kind of thing. If everything goes well in our testing, I will go ahead and either use it to come up with Granular 2 beta 1 (public) or wait for Unity 2010's final release. :)

Anurag, you're the expert.  But from what I've read about Unity it seems pretty solid even in Beta form.  Hasn't there already been a branch release based on Unity?  I say, "Go ahead with the Granular Beta."  It would be for internal use anyway.  You should be able to find and fix some bugs that would appear in a later Granular Beta.  And the absolute worst that could happen is that you'd have to wait for the Unity final - which you're probably going to do anyway before the final Granular?  Seems to me this would give you a head start on fixing possible problems.  But then, what do I know?

(And if you want a rather naive and unsophisticated tester I'd be happy to install your ISO where I've currently got the PCL Beta - I'm not using it anyway.)

Sure, I'll add you to the testers list once I am up with the dev-only beta. :)

Anurag,

As an official "Branch" of Unity Linux you would be able to make use of our developers portal as Synergy and TinyMe have begun to do.

You can visit the developers portal here:  http://dev.unity-linux.org

You will find SVN integration, WebSVN, bug trackers, wiki for develper info, and the ability to have bugs cross project as well as being able to keep your fingers on the pulse of Unity and it's releases with the roadmap feature.

If this is something you would like to do, just contact me anytime.

Hello Dev,

The Redmine site you have set up for Unity and its branches is looking all solid. Although we already have a bug tracker at launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/granular), you can still go ahead and make one for Granular as well on Unity's Dev Portal. i am thinking it would make more sense to have ours integrated with Unity so to make it easy to escalate bugs upstream. As the one we have at launchpad is not active at present, we can move to Unity's Dev Portal. :)

Anurag,

You'll need to register so that I can assign you as manager of the project.  After that, you'll be able to add members of your team and configure your bug categories and track your roadmap.

Once you've registered, ping me and I'll make you the manager of that project.

Thanks, Dev. I'll populate it as soon as I get some time. :)
