All Dreams must come to an end?

Dreamlinux may be no more soon.

This makes me sad.

Yeah Dream has always been one of my favorite disto's for sure. And I would hate to see it all come to an end. But from what I read it was the forum that was coming to an end, has that been updated to include production of the distro? And yeah that would be just terrible, and would be the end of one of the greats, so let's just hope it doesn't really happen.

Terrible news, this is. Well yeah, let's hope Dream stays alive, always.

I'm still hoping it was just the forum, I'll have to head over to their site and see if or what is still left. Unless anyone has any new info on this.

We didn't know if the forum was going to continue, then Nelson the head dev not only announced that DL 4.0 will be coming in 2010, but also paid this years hosting fee for the forums.

As you know, I have decided to stand down as Owner/Admin, but one of my best mates and long suffering LxH Crew member Djsroknrol is going to take over as Admin.

I am really happy that Dreamlinux, and these forums are going to continue, but most of all that they are going to be run by somebody who I trust implicitly.

And if I remember right, the new admin there - Djsroknrol - is also a member at our forums.

DistroWatch mentioned the Dream panic today, and I see Anurag already posted the resolution announcement before I could.

I've been busy the last few days being my Win 7 boot record got messed up and my install disc that's required for a repair is missing at the moment. So at the moment I'm trying to find a good temporary primary OS.

So far I've been testing Fedora 12, Sabayon 5.1, Ubuntu 9.10, sidux 2009-4, and a test distro I experimented with on the SUSE Studio website. Next up on my list is OpenSolaris and/or Korona. It's going to be a long week.

OpenSolaris is ok. It's very pretty but, in my own opinion, they fail in the available apps in their repos. And they can be sort of difficult to understand for a new-comer.
My largest reason for this opinion is, the lack of graphics apps. and, when I tried to install an app to play DVDs... there are too many problems in the way of licensing, etc that get in the way....

I'm happy to recommend MEPIS.  I'm running the 8.5 Beta 4 64 without a hint of a problem.  You will, however, have to install the Nvidia driver with a smxi script.  (Didn't have to with the Beta 3 - I'm sure that problem will be corrected with the next Beta or RC).  The Beta is as stable as a final release (on my machine).  You'll get the usual Mepis enhancements plus the entire Debian repository, around 28,000 packages I think.  Install takes 15-20 minutes.  Hint:  Use Aptitude instead of Synaptic.  Aptitude is a lot smarter.

Don't use the Beta 4 32.  I put it into my wifes machine and it ate her entire home.  She blamed me for losing files she hadn't backed up.  Have no idea why, but I reported it.  I think it has something to do with the KDE delete option in Dolphin.

Thank you, but I'm aware of these shortcomings. I know of a community repo that has the extra codecs and libs to play encrypted DVDs and whatnot (Fluendo is also working on porting its DVD player to OpenSolaris.)
I've used OpenSolaris before (several times actually) and have been tracking the latest development builds. Some things that look promising are Belenix, Korona, and possibly Nexenta.
I found out last night OpenSolaris does not like whatever happened to my Windows drive (it kept giving me a repeating error message about a "missing drive" or something, and couldn't install due to that drive being "not found.") Whatever messed up the Windows boot record sure did a good job of it.

And galjaman, thank you for the MEPIS recommendation. A friend over at the Raiden's Realm forums praised it as well. It's on my "to try" list.

I must confess Sabayon 5.1 is quite nice (using it right now.) Not perfect, but very good.
