Interesting article.  I'm getting really excited about KDE 4.4.  I may even look at the new Gnome on some distro or another.

By the way I downloaded and tried the "TinyMe" based on Unity.  It's got some pretty rough edges but definately shows promise.  Should be a real boon for all those folks who run around with a netbook.  Or, even an older laptop or desktop.

Personally, I prefer NOT to be in touch with the world 24/7 so I don't need one of those dinky, quirky, little netbook things.  I've got a cell phone and hate the thing.  Only reason I turn it on at all is so my wife can contact me in an emergency.  Ah well. . . .

  Link works fine on my end. But haven't we been hearing "the year of linux" for a couple years now? LOL. It will be interesting how some of the latest news threads, such as Shuttlesworth stepping down as CEO of Ubuntu, will have on linux. Personally, I don't think there will be such a year. One day we will all wake up to discover linux is everywhere and M$ is just no longer needed, wanted, nor required. Here's to hoping that day may come soon!

The article seems to point more towards Linux on mobile devices and "cloud" type environments. Not that, that is a bad thing. These are, after-all... the biggest markets of late.
As far as the Linux desktop/user OS? We have all discussed before, many times, the fact that Linux will most likely never see the top-rank due to the fact there is no conformity as far as applications.
Windows will always hold the rank as long as the majority of home users are able to surf the net and download all their glittery/shiny& sparkly trojans and worms loaded apps. and for as long as MS can hold a monopoly on software companies via $$$$
It really is ironic though, when one thinks of what most average home users, actually use their pc for.. which are just the basics...

All the things one can do just as easy (if not easier) than when using Windows?? And... without the viruses.
Facts are facts... MS has had a hold on the mass-market for home-users for so long, that the masses a pretty much completely naive and brainwashed at this point. And they will continue to throw money at expensive MS/Windows products, no matter how poor they are put together...
I used to try to ague these points on the web but eventually just gave up. It is just no use arguing with people who are so dumb as a stump and brainwashed    Now, I am at the point where I use Linux, and it works for me, and I don't have the hassles of MS/Windows and I can keep my money in my pocket and I am happy. If there are people out there who just don't get it, and never will... that's their problem.
I say Linux should continue to concentrate in the mobile and "cloud" markets... and leave the home/user market as is... It will never die and those of us who know how great it is will always be able to enjoy it, and just laugh at those who whine about Windows and stare at them in complete dismay. 

All good things must come to an end, and since so many people see M$ as a good thing, I guess that must come to an end...eventually. Or will it? M$ is actually a bad thing, but then again, I've read about so many big companies falling at some point or another in the history books that I'm confident that M$ will eventually die. We must have faith. Just keep in mind that it may be centuries before it happens, but it will.

I agree and don't think MS will be around forever, but I also do not think that Linux will be it's replacement. It's an ideology and that will be replaced by something. I believe that most people would choose simple over all else. I also think that consistency would be chosen first as well, so whatever replaces MS would be something of the same. So in other words as I believe MS will not be around forever, I believe when that day comes, it'll be replaced with something just the same as MS.

That could turn out to be possible only if Apple leaves behind it's "only for the passionate" ideology. All Apple products are designed like that, without targeting mass audience. That is why it's products outside of US & Europe are still hard to obtain due to high costs.

Yep I agree with you completely, and I wish everyone in Linux could unite like that. But part of what makes Linux what it is today, which is a great thing, is the freedom to make it what it is today.

I do think Linux is in a close second to third in that answer. And I do also believe Linux will get it's chance, just not sure when. As Gemini said it's in a mobile market right now. So it'll be someday, I just think Apple has been around for so long that you're correct. And if they were to change as you've mentioned, I think it would only help them. Only time will tell.
