I just got 2 Radeon X1950 Pro's off of ebay. yesterday they arrived and I replaced my GeForce 8600 GTS with one. I'm currently on sidux and using the free/open-source radeon driver and 3D effects work great (had to install some non-free firmware first, since Debian is now stripping that junk out of the kernel). Performance is great and the card doesn't make as much noise (so far).

The cards were used but in decent condition. I have yet to test the FOSS drivers on intensive 3D apps (like Nexuiz). When I get around to it, I'll post my experiences in doing so.

How much did you get them for, as i remember X1950 are way too old compared to 8600.
although it might give you better performance in basic opengl or dx9 games.

They came as a pair for about $56 total.
And yes, it is technically a 'downgrade' but I don't use DX10 and I wanted to be more FOSS-friendly.

Congrats! Although I'll trade open source usability for user friendliness any day. nVidia supports Linux (and supports it well) so I support nVidia. ATi's support isn't so good, therefore I boycott. I could have gotten an HD 2950 card for much less than I paid for my 275GTX card, but nVidia's support made the difference.

I understand your point, but the problem with the proprietary drivers are that they do not work with development versions of the kernel or xorg. My Radeon is working very well with Mandriva Cooker at the moment.

I recently upgraded my card again. I'm now using a Sparkle 1GB nVidia GeForce 9800+ GTX. I'm not able to use development kernels and such anymore, but the performance is amazing. :)

Wow! That's cool. I have a 512 MB NVIDIA 9800GT, but still I love it. :)

Yesterday I got a Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 5770. Works great so far. Haven't tried it with any distros yet, but I hear both the proprietary and open-source drivers are shaping up. It wont be too long and we'll have KMS and acceleration for the new Radeons.

Cool. It would seem you are a graphics card collector. ;)

LOL! :D I'm not trying to be, but that's what it certainly seems like lately. Technology moves so fast... :P

Congratulations to you for your upgrade! And I believe that you actually got it off for a very good bargain, otherwise you would be opting for something newer. In fact, it should be giving you quite a good experience and most importantly an enjoyable one. Hopefully I will have enough to get myself an upgrade too. It is just too must expenditures I must handle, otherwise I would have been getting one without much hesitation.
