Loving the Granular Linux OS, but having one last nagging problem. Tried to get the screensaver function to work. Here are the steps I followed:

1.   Menu => System => Config => Control Center => Appearance & Themes => Screensaver ( See the first screenshot )
When I set the screensaver I want, set the time and in Advanced Options set it to High, I am thinking it will activate, but
     it does not.

2.   I then went into Menu => System => Configuration => Other => Screensaver ( see screenshot number 2 ) to set the
screensaver. I get an error message stating that X Screensaver daemon is not active on Display 0. So, I click on OK to
launch it now. It will then activate with the screensaver I selected on this screen at the time interval. After I shutdown
and boot back in, the set screensaver does not work unless I follow the path again in step # 2.

3.   I then went into Configure Your Computer => Logged in as Root => System tab => Manage System Settings ( See
Screenshot # 3 ) but I did not find the XScreensaver daemon listed there.

4.   I also went into Synaptic to look for XScreensaver but did not find it there either.  Am I missing something here or is
there a bug ?   Any help would be appreciated.

5.   Forgot to mention, I went into the Control Center and selected Peripherals => Display. It says Display 1 and it's grayed
     out.  See Screenshot # 4.

Please go into synaptic do a search for xscreensaver, and post a screen of what's installed.

We have two problems that may be related....or not....What I believe you have is the XScreensaver program and the KDE screensaver program. That would give you the error in screen 2 because the screensavers that are active thru control panel are a separate function than the other. Therefore you have the question there. Now, I have had the same issue...but...I equated mine to an error in ACPI. I activate mine when I leave my computer by CTRL+L which locks the screen and activates the screensaver. One of the other systems I had....I believe it was Mandriva 09 when I had it on this laptop. I believe, that the GNOME system found all the screensavers that I wanted after a reboot....you may want to check to see if you have the same screensavers in both apps. If you do, I would run with the one in the sys control panel.

I wish I had more help for you....I seem to remember a problem I had before with KDE, I will keep researching it and see if I can make it work....but then in re-reading your post I think I have an idea of what is going on. See, the system is going to go by what the system control panel's settings are. The issue is, we want to stop the control panel's screen saver from running...sooo....Chris....would putting the XScreensaver daemon in autostart be a quick and dirty remedy?

There would be a drawback because it will still ask you to activate it for Display 0......so.....hang in there let's see what we can dig up and fix this. What you may try is the CTRL+L before giving control to Xscreensaver and see if you get a screensaver that way. Remember that that will lock your screen and you will need your root password to unlock.

And thanks for your interest in Granular we hope you continue to enjoy it.

Rich,

Thanks for the info. As far as having the same screensaver, through the Control Center I can't get the GL Matrix screensaver, it's not listed in the GL screensavers. So, I had to select a different one. But if I go through System => Configuration => Screensaver, GL Matrix is listed and I can select it.  Also, when I get the messaage saying that the Xscreensaver daemon is not active in display 0, it's confusing because if I check my dsiplay settings it says Display 1. So that's where I am getting a bit confused. But for now, I will activate the screensave daemon each time I need it. Hope you guys can figure this one out.

I run Granular Linux on my PC, but right now I run Mandriva 2008.1 on my laptop. I can activate the screensaver through right clicking on the desktop and select configure desktop from the menu. I then select the screensaver option and set it from there and it will work.  Hope that little bit of info helps.

Appreciate the help. Keep up the good work. Granular Linux is a real nice distro. Looks very good. I also found the specs as far as what are the minimum requirements for Granular.. My mother in law has an older PC with Win98 on it and it's a real dog. Have to repeatedly fix it and clean viruses ans spyware off of it. Told her about Linux and looks as though I will show her Granular Linux and install that OS on her PC.

gotcha as far as the screesavers. I will do some more research and see what I can find.

Think that machine will run much better with granular on it.

Oh and by the way, to lock the computer it is CTRL+ALT+L on CTRL+L

LOL
