Ok my experience with firefox not loading so far has kinda revolved around upgrading xulrunner to version 1.9.0.6-1. I think it's an upgrade from the pclos big update, but either way as soon as I upgraded it, I could no longer get firefox to load. So I downgraded xulrunner to 1.9.0.5-1 & now I can get firefox up and running again.

You can try downgrading these packages by using the force option in synaptic.

You click on package in the toolbar of synaptic, and then select force version. Then from the pop up window, select the 1.9.0.5 version. You'll want to have the package highlighted that you want to force a version for.

Also you'll have to do the same for all three xulrunner packages

xulrunner
xulrunner-devel
xulrunner-devel-unstable

Also for those of you that are not comfortable forcing the version, or cannot force the version for whatever reason. Then I put together the xulrunner rpms for version 1.9.0.5 and you could wait for Anurag to put them into the repo, and then go ahead and install them.

good luck.

Hi

I also have the same problem with Firefox not loading after carring out the latest update. I even went to the extent of reinstalling Granular from scratch since i had played around adding programmes. I hoped a clean install might do the trick - I carried out the update again - and still firefox is not working! Egg timer runs for a number of seconds then nothing!

Being a linux newbie I was really enjoying Granular - hope this is an easy one to fix!

An Update

I followed the instruction re xulrunner and setting it back to the previous version - and it works - firefox is running again now.

One other question though re Granular - i am confused with the fact that there are 2 package managers - Synaptic and K package, what is the reason to have 2 - and which is the correct one to use for updates?

Hope i'm not asking a silly question - because its confusing me!

:D hi guys, I'm back and glad to stay with you again...I had the same problem but I'd like to thank chrisz for precious advices. now the fox is runnin'...

Synaptic is used by most people, cause it does a good job with package dependencies. Kpackage is a little more advanced, and can be used nicely for installing single packages, and would be a lot closer to a gui for rpm.

For those who have yet to solve this problem, please check this post:

Hi Guys

Sorry, I've not been able to fiddle with my PC for a few days. But this still isn't working for me.

I now have firefox 3.0.6-2granular installed with xulrunner 1.9.0.5-2granular. Firefox still crashes after I click the 'Start New Session' dialog.

I tried downgrading Firefox to the previous version and Synaptic prompted me to upgrade xulrunner. I didn't want to do this as you've found the new xulrunner to be part of the problem. But when I chose not to mark xulrunner for upgrade, Synaptic wouldn't let me force the Firefox downgrade. So I went ahead with downgrading Firefox and upgrading xulrunner and, not surprisingly, Firefox still won't load.

When I downgrade xulrunner, Firefox gets upgraded. I can't seem to downgrade both.

Suggestions please?

Lance

You don't need to downgrade both. If you are using the combination of firefox 3.0.6-2granular installed with xulrunner 1.9.0.5-2granular, you have it all right. To try solving your problem, go to your home folder, enable view of hidden files, and delete the folder .mozilla. Then try starting Firefox.

He should export his bookmarks first if he in fact has any saved in the current firefox

elldee on February 21, 2009, 06:58:48 AM
Did this - saved a copy of bookmarks file to desktop, deleted .mozilla... still doesn't work. In fact it's now crashing before getting to the 'Start New Session' dialog.

I'm starting Firefox from the menu, not the panel... and I've re-started my system after each change.

Incidentally, I don't have the xulrunner-devel or xulrunner-devel-unstable on my system. Do I need these?

No, you just need to have xulrunner-1.9.0.5 and firefox-3.0.6 installed to make Firefox work as expected. You need to be particular with these versions.

could there be a lockfile somewhere that is not permitting a state change here? The reason I question is he says that he is crashing at the point where it is asking to go back to a new session...or I am assuming, it says continue with the previous session. So maybe it has not fully downgraded or applied the downgraded xulrunner to 3.0.6.

This lockfile might be in the root firefox and not the home .mozilla folder.....though I am not sure about this. It maybe worth exploring.

If he removed the .mozilla....that should mean that all possible plugins should be unloaded and firefox should be to default....

Isn't there a way to build a new profile and delete the old one? This might start everything back. The fact that it keeps asking to start a new session, shows me that it believes there is a point to go back to....which brings me back to the possible lockfile.....

Just a thought....

I too am experiencing the same problem. I went into Synaptic and clicked on Mark All Upgrades. Firefox updated to 3.0.6-2 granular 2008. But after clicking on the icon on the desktop, I get the same experience: hourglass for about 10 seconds and then nothing. Tried doing the adding application the menu thing, and still it did not work. So I marked 3.0.6-2 for complete removal and went back to version 3.0.1 as listed in Synaptic. I also searched for xulrunner as noted earlier in the these posts, in Synaptic and listing was available ansd marked as installed.  So far I am extremely pleased with Granular Linux, but not able to get Firefox version 3.0.6.2 to work is very frustrating. Any other ideas ?

Thanks
