This is no big problem for me as I prefer and use Opera.
I went to load Firefox to get the Granular forum URL, I tried the taskbar icon and also from the menu and the Firefox showed up on the taskbar with an egg timer for about 4-5 seconds and then disappeared without loading firefox.
I uninstalled it in Synaptic and reinstalled it, but it would still not load.
Fortunately I got the URL from Konqueror.

As I said it is not a problem, but I do not like unsolved problems, also if it can be solved I will have learnt a little bit more.

It's probably just from upgrading, uninstalling, and re-installing the program.

If you right click on an empty portion of the task bar go to

add application to panel

then

Internet

then

web browsers

then click on firefox.

It'll add a new icon to launch the program. Now if it places the icon somewhere you don't want it. Then right click the icon and go to move, and then
just drag and drop the icon where you would like it to be. And it'll work for ya after that.

Oh also before doing all of this, I would right click on the current icon for firefox, and click remove. That way you're removing the one that doesn't work first.

Also, which version of Firefox are you currently using?

trackrat on February 09, 2009, 10:11:01 AM
Adding the application has not cured the problem.

According to Synaptic I am using,
Firefox 3.0.5-2 Granular 2008 next generation browser.

Also loaded is,
Firefox-en-GB 3.0.5-2 Granular 2008 British English interface for Firefox.

if you could open up a terminal and type into it firefox

and then please copy and paste what pops up here for us so we can see what's going on.

I hope I have done this right.

firefox: relocation error: /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9/libxul.so: symbol png_get_firs                                                           t_frame_is_hidden, version PNG12_0 not defined in file libpng12.so.0 with link t                                                           ime reference

I think the package "libpng" needs to be updated. Or is it "xulrunner" that needs to be updated?

trackrat on February 10, 2009, 07:52:07 PM
I have been into synaptic and checked both those packages and have the latest installed.
I was curious because using Thunderbird, I could not click on an URL in an e-mail as it used firefox by default to open them.

I have just transfered my e-mail account to Opera, so I am not to bothered about Firefox.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

chrisz on February 11, 2009, 02:30:52 AM
yeah if you're still interested in working on this, then try upgrading xulrunner from the repo's and that should make a difference.

trackrat on February 12, 2009, 12:30:11 AM
I have just checked in the repos, and by clicking on properties in xulrunner it says i have the latest version.
however when I click on  libpng it has the prefix 3, although the properties box says it is the latest version, when I posted the error message from the terminal, I could not find the file  libpng12.so.0, could this have something to do with it?.

Also in my ignorance I assume to upgrade any of the repos, I just press the reload button, is that correct.

chrisz on February 12, 2009, 01:08:44 AM
Yes that I believe that's one of the requirements to run the program.

And yes you are correct, to refresh the file lists for your repo's all you do is click reload. Wait for it to finish updating, and then you know
you have the latest packages.

seems a lot of people are having the same problems, time after time  in Granular, lets hope this help the developers iron out the bugs and get it to work properly

Have you tried the latest version of Firefox available in our repo? It's 3.0.0.5:

That is the version I was using.

As the egg timer shows for about four seconds, then disappears is their anything I can do to generate output to show what the fault could be ?,

peter,

As far as I can see, you're the only one having this issue. It's not some wide spread problem in granular. And the developers again can only offer you suggestions. If your system's hardware is not fully supported, or your system's config needs work. Then that's your responsibility.

But there is not some wide spread problem with systems not having sound on the internet. Apparently just yours.
