I have a mandriva 08 cd, I was wondering, is it worth downloading the 09 livecd? are they simular and therefore don't nessesitate an upgrade or are they completely different :P

Thanks

Honestly there is nothing wrong with 8 but they do a lot of updates and changes between releases. So yes it'd be worth it to download
9, plus 9 is just a sweet release. So if you want what I consider to be Mandriva pretty close to it's best then I'd go with 9. It'll be
worth it.

Additionally, Mandriva '08 is based on KDE 3.5 and Mandriva '09 on KDE 4.

Went back to Granular 1.0 on the lappie :)
if you bought it
a truck driver brought it

thats interesting. What did you hate about it?

chrisz on February 07, 2009, 04:38:47 PM
Yeah I use Granular as a default on my systems, and all of the other distro's I install are only for testing. So my main distro is always granular.  ;)

Try using the Gnome version of Mandriva. I think you will find better success that way. I have it installed that way on a separate drive on mine and it runs well....not as well as it does on the desktop. But the desktop has more power anyway.

But you are going back to Granular anyway so that is a good choice...but should you decide you want to go back, try GNOME.

KDE 4 was one of the reasons I walked from SuSE to Ubuntu. How many times do you have to try to install something from a live CD only to have it turn out bad. I should have tried GNOME in SuSE but, the experience of the Ubuntu live vs the SuSE live discs were night and day. The SuSE disc, really poorly laid out, I am guessing because it really worked the CD drive and I had loads and loads of really SLOW times just to get the desktop to load. Ubuntu Live. Desktop with GNOME up quickly and not a lot of CD seek and spin and wrench and so on.

And so Rich what does that have to do with Mandriva....UGH.....sorry guys....the point being that GNOME seemed to work better in my experience than KDE on my systems with Mandriva.

I will always agree when it comes to Mandriva. I wish I would have been a fan in the early years, I think I would have enjoyed it.

But yes the gnome version is quite slick, and looks a little like this.

Hmmm... I have never used the GNOME edition of Mandriva. But maybe, this is the time? The screenies look beautiful. :)

Anurag,

Yeah for me I love it, and when I put the task bar at the bottom I love it even more. But I know you like it up there, so it probably looks fairly normal to ya.

But yes it is very slick, and so nicely put together.

I like mandriva but kde 4 is not so ok for now. maybe I'll  give a try at the new one when it comes.

for now granular got so much fascination than the other distros.

can't imagine granular with kde 4. only time will tell

We'll be shortly working on to package KDE 4 RPMs for Granular. KDE 4.2 seems very much promising. It should be able to undo all the anger KDE 4 initially imparted into KDE fans.
