Hey guys.
Its nice to see that microsoft have released a BETA operating system for free. Only for testing though, I imagine that in 6 months or so, my key will expire. They released this operating system to the people who agree to send bug reports and feedback constantly.

I think microsoft are bringing diasaster to their own plate, distributing this operating system now means that it doesn't just have to be leaked onto dodgy torrent sites for people to work on cracking it. Now microsoft are pretty much encouraging this by releasing it free?

Im currently downloading it, although I had to pause it to post this. My internet is about 0.7 of a mbit so when Im downloading something, no pc in the house will load google. We have 7 computers in the house, each belonging to different people, you can imagine the complaints I get when downloading? XD

Anyway, if anyone is interested in this, I can get you the download link!

Yours

Tom

Kurakroma,

MS always release the beta versions of their OSes for free. In fact, I was following Windows Vista since its first beta came out back in 2004, when it was called Longhorn. Then came the release candidates which were a lot different from betas. And finally came the final thing after a huge delay.

With Windows 7, MS wants to improve on the mistakes they did while developing Vista. The latest beta release of Windows 7 is not more than an improvised version of Vista. I have had not enough time to actually test the thing out, but from what I have seen in the screenshots, Windows 7 seems to be ok-ok, as of yet.

But do let us know of your thoughts on it too.

Well, if you ask me honestly, this is not their kindness, this is their market strategy - to get free bug hunters who would happily download their pre-release editions and spend their time tracking bugs and reporting them to MS. This hugely reduces their testing cost. Also, it's always good for everyone, even for such big corporations, to take public opinion of their products.

I tied the Win 7 beta, and although it looks nice and has speed improvements, it leaves a lot to be desired. OpenGL functionality is missing (wasn't it not in Vista as well) and a beta nVidia OpenGL driver did not yield any speed boasts (quite the opposite). I promptly sent feedback complaining about lack of OpenGL support. I doubt it'll do any good though.
Of course, if M$ does what it did with Vista and continually gut features until the big release is out, it'll flop in no time.
I wouldn't hold my breath on M$ selling it at a fair(er) price than Vista. And I have no idea how many versions they are planning to release. My hope is no more than 3 or else it will definitely be off my "to-check-out" list.
